FREEDOM

What does freedom mean to me?

Freedom is defined as “the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants”, it is also defined as “the state of not being imprisoned or enslaved”; (oxford dictionary 2014). I believe that we are blessed in Australia to have freedom; that we are able to speak our minds and do what we think is right. People in other countries aren’t as fortunate though, because governments dictate what they say or do. As a teenager in Australia, I sometimes take the freedom I have for granted.

My parents give me a lot of freedom when it comes to entertainment; I listen to a variety of music, watch TV shows and movies with higher rating or just TV in general. Some teens my age are not allowed to because their parents won’t let them or they don’t have TV’s or other devices.  I’m grateful that my parents allow me to listen and watch what I like and that we are fortunate enough to have the devices that permit us to do so.

In my family there isn’t the pressure of having the same job as the generations before me. Unlike some families, children are expected to be doctors or lawyers or any other profession that has run in the family. It may sound silly but when I started to watch the Mentalist I thought how cool would that be, to be able to pick up on peoples’ facial movements, traits and other things that most people ignore. I do get that it is just a TV show and that there are scripts but there are people that can do those sorts of things and courses that you can do in university. Last year I started watching Sea Patrol; it’s about the Australian NAVY and their experiences, again I thought what if I worked for the Defence Force. It has programs that allow you try out the NAVY for a year and if it’s not the career you want then you can leave. You can probably tell that I get inspiration for future careers from TV shows. It may seem crazy but to think that I’m able to choose whatever career I want and I’m able to change if I’m not happy with it. Sadly people don’t have that freedom to choose and change jobs because they are in a cruel industry that affect over 27 million people; slavery. If these poor people don’t like their jobs, they have to put up with it because it’s the only way they can protect themselves, if they are luck it may provide a trivial income for their families. Not only is it highly unlikely for them to ever get out of slavery it’s also unlikely for them to be hired by anyone if they manage to escape without help from originations such as; Bloom and World Vision to name a couple.

In Australia we are so fortunate to be able to choose what we want to say and do, I believe that many people take that for granted. I think that people expect to have freedom of speech and they expect to be able to do what they like with themselves, but freedom is a gift and we are so lucky!

I hope people think about what they have and when they compare it someone in a third world country and are grateful for what they have.
